Senate Showdown: Sen.Natasha Akpoti, Senate President Godswill Akpabio Engage in Heated Exchange

A dramatic confrontation unfolded in the Nigerian Senate yesterday as Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan clashed with Senate President Godswill Akpabio over a seating arrangement dispute. The altercation began when Senator Natasha discovered that her seat had been reassigned upon resumption of the session. She refused to comply with the new arrangement, sparking a heated exchange with Akpabio.

The Senate President ruled in favor of the new seating arrangement, citing Senate rules that grant him the authority to allocate and reassign seats. However, Senator Natasha was adamant, accusing Akpabio of deliberately silencing her and discriminating against her. She claimed that since a nightclub incident, Akpabio had been targeting her, preventing her bills from progressing.

The situation escalated, with Akpabio instructing the Sergeant-at-Arms to intervene and remove Senator Natasha from the chamber. However, the Sergeant-at-Arms did not remove her, and instead, stood by as Senator Natasha continued to voice her objections.

Other senators intervened, attempting to mediate the situation. Senator Isah Jibrin apologized on behalf of Senator Natasha, acknowledging Akpabio’s authority to reassign seats. Senator Sunday Karimi also expressed his displeasure, stating that Senator Natasha’s behavior had breached his privilege.

Akpabio ultimately appealed for unity and focus, urging senators to prioritize serving the Nigerian people. The incident highlights the tensions and conflicts that can arise within the legislative body, particularly when it comes to issues of authority and privilege.
