Lagos State House of Assembly’s first female Speaker, Mojisola Meranda, has resigned from her position, effective immediately. The resignation was announced during a live plenary session on Monday, March 3, 2025.
Meranda’s resignation comes just 50 days after she was sworn in as Speaker, following the impeachment of her predecessor, Mudashiru Obasa. Despite facing opposition and controversy during her brief tenure, Meranda expressed gratitude to her colleagues for their support and collaboration.
In her farewell remarks, Meranda said, “I make history as the first female Speaker of the House of Assembly. I value the solidarity freely given to me. I am sincerely grateful to each of you for your support and collaboration during my short but interesting tenure. I take a bow and step back as your Speaker”.
Lawmakers praised Meranda’s leadership, with Desmond Olusola Elliot thanking her for leading the House with “grace and efficiency”. Temitope Adewale also celebrated her contributions, calling her a “heroine of democracy”.
The resignation is expected to pave the way for the possible reinstatement of Obasa, who may also step down to allow for the emergence of a new Speaker.³ The House has commenced the process of electing a new Speaker and Deputy Speaker.
Meranda will continue to serve her constituents in Apapa Constituency 1 and Lagos State at large.
